Vote.org Condemns Executive Order Impeding Voter Registration
Washington—Vote.org, the nation's largest nonpartisan organization committed to equitable access to the ballot box, unequivocally opposes the president’s executive order signed on March 25th, 2025. The order, which (1) forces voters to provide proof of citizenship when registering using the national mail voter registration form, and (2) threatens the rights of mail-in voters, is nothing short of an assault on our democracy.
By requiring documents like a passport or birth certificate to register, this order erects deliberate barriers that could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters—particularly low-income Americans, the elderly, communities of color, and naturalized citizens. Should this proof of citizenship requirement be put in place, millions of eligible voters could be blocked from exercising their constitutional right to vote.
Moreover, the order seeks to disqualify ballots that arrive after Election Day—even if mailed on time. This executive order weakens mail-in voting procedures that help ensure every eligible voter can participate in our democracy and further erodes public trust in the electoral process.
Let’s be clear: voter fraud in federal elections is virtually nonexistent. This order is not about election security—it’s about manipulating the system to suppress votes. It takes direct aim at long-standing, bipartisan efforts to expand access to the ballot and ensure free and fair elections. This executive order is also a blatant and unconstitutional overreach of presidential power. The Constitution gives Congress and the states - NOT the president - the authority to set election rules. By attempting to override that balance, this order poses a dangerous threat to the very foundation of our democracy.
Vote.org will not stand by while voting rights are stripped away. We will fight relentlessly and without compromise against every attempt to undermine our elections. The right to vote is the cornerstone of American democracy, and we will do everything in our power to defend it.
