Young Writers Are Reimagining Democracy—One Story at a Time
As the United States approaches its 250th birthday, a powerful question sits at the center of our collective future: what comes next for democracy?
At Vote.org, we believe the answer shouldn’t come only from policymakers, historians, or people old enough to vote. It should also come from young people—especially those who are already thinking critically about fairness, freedom, and the world they want to inherit.
That’s why Vote.org is proud to partner with Cosmic Writers to launch Writing Democracy: A Utopian & Dystopian Fiction Contest, a nationwide writing competition for students in grades 3–12.

Writing as a Civic Act
Writing Democracy invites students to imagine the future of American democracy through fiction—specifically, through utopian and dystopian storytelling. By using imagination as a civic tool, the contest empowers young writers to explore big ideas about power, community, justice, and hope long before they’re eligible to cast a ballot.
At a moment when civic participation can feel overwhelming or inaccessible, storytelling offers another way in. It allows students to ask “what if?”, to name what feels broken, and to dream boldly about what could be better.
The Prompt: From Dystopia to Possibility
Students are asked to respond to a creative prompt centered on transformation and choice:
A main character living in a dystopian society stumbles across a better world. When they return to their own reality, they must decide how to expose the truth—and whether it’s possible to build a better future for their community.
The prompt is designed to spark imagination while encouraging students to reflect on real-world questions about democracy, power, and collective responsibility.
Who Can Participate
The contest is open to students nationwide and divided into three age groups:
- Grades 3–5: up to 1,000 words
- Grades 6–8: up to 1,750 words
- Grades 9–12: up to 2,500 words
Submission deadline: 11:59 PM ET on Monday, April 13, 2026
Resources for Educators
To make it easy for classrooms and community groups to participate, Cosmic Writers has created free, three-session mini-curricula for each age group. These resources include slide decks, writing exercises, and handouts designed to help students build their stories step by step.
Teachers, librarians, and community educators can access the materials through dedicated Padlet pages on the Cosmic Writers website.
“We’re thrilled to join forces with Vote.org to help young people use writing to make civic impact,” said Rowana Miller, founder and Executive Director of Cosmic Writers. “By harnessing the power of fiction, we invite students to share their ideas about the kind of America they aspire to build in the next 250+ years of our country.”
How to Get Involved
Students and educators can learn more about the contest, access classroom resources, and submit entries at: https://www.cosmicwriters.org/writing-democracy by April 13, 2026.
Because the future of democracy isn’t something young people should just inherit—it’s something they deserve to imagine, question, and help shape right now.
